Do Lash Extensions Hurt? What to Expect at Your First Appointment.
If you’ve never had lash extensions before, one of the first questions that might come up is: do they hurt?
The short answer is NO - lash extensions should never hurt. In fact, your appointment should feel comfortable, relaxing, and maybe even like a little lash nap.
But let’s break it down so you know exactly what to expect.
Why Lash Extensions Shouldn’t Hurt
A professional, licensed lash artist will isolate each and every natural lash before applying an extension. This means the extensions are never glued to multiple natural lashes or onto your skin. When applied correctly, you shouldn’t feel any pulling, pinching, or poking (but remember you might occasionally have this happen, we are human after all)
What You Might Feel (That’s Normal)
A slight cool feeling when primer, cleanser, water, or saline is used
Your eyes being gently taped or held closed
A little stiffness right after your set (like new nails before you break them in)
These sensations should fade quickly, and none of them should be painful.
When Lash Extensions Do Hurt
If you ever feel stinging, burning, pinching, or any kind of uncomfortable sensation during your appointment, something is wrong. Please say something! Common reasons lash extensions might hurt include:
Clumps of lashes stuck together (poor isolation)
Extensions glued to your skin instead of your natural lashes
Heavy extensions that are too long or too thick for your natural lashes
Poor-quality products
That’s why it’s so important to choose a licensed and certified lash artist who understands lash health and proper application techniques.
How to Make Sure You’re in Good Hands
When booking, ask your lash artist:
Are you licensed and certified?
How do you protect the health of natural lashes?
Your eyes are too important to take chances with. The right artist will never be offended by you asking questions about their protocol, licensing, and techniques. They should be answering everything with patience, confidence, and understanding.
